Moby Grape had the potential to be one of the greatest San Francisco bands of the psychedelic rock genre. They were talented writers and players and deserve more than just a footnote in the history books. The Matrix was an early small San Francisco club that was managed by Jefferson Airplanes’ Marty Balin. Together these factors add up to a real “sleeper” of a poster. The Dead poster from a week earlier also in this sale trades for considerable dollars and is next to impossible to find in undamaged condition. Just as was used for the Dead poster the central image for this poster is an illustration by late 19th – mid 20th century German Illustrator Heinrich Kley. In this illustration the Greco–Roman deity Bacchus is portrayed as the source of great drunkenness and debauchery. Great stuff! This early and rare poster is in amazing condition for being 51 years old!
The Matrix was a tiny club that held just 150. How many posters could have been created for this event? This is the second CGC graded example to ever appear at public auction. This first was graded a 7.5 and sold in our August CGC sale for $500.
