In 1971,  The Grateful Dead were at the peak of their songwriting genius. Having recently released “ Working Man’s Dead” and “American Beauty,” and working out the songs that would end up on the next three albums ( Europe ‘72, “Garcia” and “Ace), the band was on a creative tear. Their live sound was changing too, incorporating the folk and country-influenced material from the last two records into the mix and returning to one drummer, with Mickey Hart having left the band one month earlier.

The Dead had a long tradition of playing gyms at small colleges and universities, where they built their unparalleled touring machine. In March, they landed in Lansing, Michigan, playing at MSU, and the the university's Art Department created several prints for the concert.  A black and white poster and this 3-color print. Both of these posters are super scarce items from this period. Oddly, though, neither of these illustrations has the Dead’s personnel correct for that period. The poster offered here has an image of Tom Constanten (TC), who had left the band in 1970, and no image of Bill Kreutzmann. The other poster shows TC and Mickey Hart, who had just left the band.
