Most fans of this auction are aware of the impact that Bill Graham had on the San Francisco Rock Scene in the 1960s and beyond however only a handful of collectors are tuned into the early history of the world’s most famous rock and roll impresario.
This original poster is from September of 1965 at the Gate Theatre in Sausalito. The poster advertises "Candelaio" directed by the Mime Troupe founder R. G. Davis. “Ronnie” Davis was soon indicted for performing in public parks without a permit. In response, Graham organized the first Mime Troupe fundraising event. These events were so popular that he held two more fundraising events. The third fundraiser featured a performance by the Warlocks later to be known as the Grateful Dead.
Several months later in 1966, Graham's name still appeared on some of their advertising but was soon removed as he was involved with his new business. The Mime Troupe toiled on in pretty much the same fashion as they previously had with their Politically critical-ironic overtones and free performances.
