Austin Texas has a rich musical tradition dating back to the 1930’s. Often spoken of in the same breath with Nashville and New Orleans, Austin is considered an American sweet spot of musical collaboration and innovation. During the 1960’s a small group of students began promoting Psychedelic and Blues concerts in the Austin area. They were originally known as the Electric Grandmothers. Later they became the Vulcan Gas Company and eventually opened a venue under the same name.
The Vulcan Gas Co. was responsible for a wonderful series of concert posters that are very scarce and beautiful. The poster being offered here advertised a very early Electric Grandmother production. The event featured psychedelic pioneers 13th Floor Elevators at the Austin City Coliseum on February 10th 1967. The posters from this series were produced in very low quantities and are therefore extremely popular with collectors racing to acquire what little surviving examples of these issues surface!
