This ULTRA SCARCE Original handbill known as The Rock and Roll Ball is for the second Family Dog show put on by Rifkin & Scully and features artwork by George Hunter of The Charlatans. After this show, Chet would partner up with Bill Graham to start producing shows at the Fillmore. Chet put forth some of the Family Dog crew as a production force but ultimately lost control over the venue bands and the power to run things as he saw fit. Chet then shook free of Graham and found his own venue for dance concerts the Avalon Ballroom. This brief phase of the Family Dog was done after just 2 shows at California Hall.

This incredible item is a quintessential George Hunter design… subtly psychedelic, wryly humorous and stylized as is George’s forte, a real early FD classic. The Charlatans though not necessarily identifying themselves as a “Family Dog band” were in the heart of the “Dog House” social network housing and schemes and was intertwined with the Family Dog more than any other band other than possibly Big Brother. A piece of VERY EARLY San Francisco history!
