We are thrilled to offer this rare early New York City punk poster in our auction - this example here being in CGC 9.4 high quality condition! It was created for a run of shows featuring Patti Smith and Television at Max's Kansas City from August 28th through September 2nd, 1974. Along with CBGBs, Max's Kansas City was one of the premier venues and birthplaces of the New York punk scene. It operated from 1965 until 1981.
In 1974, Patti Smith had just formed the Patti Smith Group featuring Lenny Kaye on guitar and Richard Sohl on piano. They released their first single, Hey Joe / Piss Factory that same year. It wasn't until the following year that the group would release their debut album, Horses, and it wasn't until 1978 that Smith achieved a commercial breakthrough with the single Because the Night, co-written by Bruce Springsteen.
Television was arguably one of the most influential early New York City punk bands and had just formed the year before the shows advertised here occurred. By 1975, they amassed a cult following in the city. Their debut album Marquee Moon wasn't released until early 1977. At the time of these shows, Richard Hell was still a member of the band.
This is an incredible poster showcasing two legendary names in punk history years before they became known to the world - an absolutely incredible piece of history. We sold a lower 4.5 graded example 2 years ago for $1,560.00. This is a much higher 9.4 graded poster that we expect will receive quite a bit of attention!
