A genuine Delta Blues singer Mississippi Fred McDowell is considered by many music enthusiasts to be the first north hill country blues artist to achieve widespread recognition for his work. Here he appeared at the Jabberwock in Berkeley for a 3 night run in 1966.
The Jabberwok started as a successful jazz club in the early sixties until it was purchased by Bill "Jolly Blue" Ehlert in 1965. Ehlert converted much of the venue’s performances to a more psychedelic sound. In 1966 Ehlert hired Jesse Cahn who had been a guest drummer for the Chambers Brothers to co-manage the Jabberwock while he ran the Matrix in San Francisco. Very few of these original posters have survived the test of time in ANY condition.
