The legendary Newport Jazz Festival in 1969 was one of the most experimental of all. The lineup was particularly eclectic which included Miles Davis Ray Charles Led Zeppelin Frank Zappa Jeff Beck and Jethro Tull. Excess crowds of over 20 000 fans unable to obtain tickets led to gate crashing and other disturbances. Stories of the weekend went down in folklore for years after and in some ways it was a pre-cursor to Woodstock a month later.
