This is the FIRST example of this 1966 original cardboard poster we’ve ever offered in our auction! It promotes a run of shows he played at The Trip in West Hollywood. These concerts were very early in Donovan’s career. He did not release his 3rd album “Sunshine Superman” until later that year.
The Trip was owned by Elmer Valentine who also owned the nearby Whiskey-A-Go-Go. Several legendary bands performed at the Trip including The Velvet Underground and The Byrds. The venue was short lived and closed its doors in 1967. This cardboard poster was produced by Colby Printing.
The historic Colby Poster Printing Company produced promotional material between 1948 and 2012 and they became legendary for their signature fluorescent inks and bold all-caps typography although none of the original staff had any formal design training. They were members of the letterpress union the screen printers union and the typesetters union. Original cardboard posters are super popular and remain one of the most highly sought after type of concert memorabilia ever known.
