The notorious Rolling Stones concert at the Altamont Speedway in December of 1969 is legendary on many levels. Having been documented in the 1970 film “Gimme Shelter” the events of the concert are well known to even casual fans. The tragic outcome of the concert symbolically and literally marked the end of "The Sixties". A detailed account of the historic day can be found here.
The planning and permits for this concert were finalized so near to the event that there was no time for a properly executed promotion and advertising plan. As a result there was very little time to produce promotional material. The poster is clearly a rush job using a photo that appeared a month earlier on the BG201 and BG 202 posters along with Randy Tutrn lettering of "Rolling Stones". There is also no ticket information as this was a free show.
This poster being offered is one of the “Holy Grails” of rock poster collecting at the exact 50th Anniversary of this event. Original First Printings of this poster were printed in three color schemes a yellow a green and this orange version on EXTREMELY THIN paper. Only a handful of these posters have surfaced over the past 5 decades and almost all have been restored in one way or another.
In contrast this poster would be called by most as "Dead Mint" and must certainly have to be included in any Finest Known Condition Census. It is certainly the finest quality specimen we have ever seen handled or heard of.
The front of the poster is absolutely pristine with crisp blemish free paper rich colors and razor sharp pinpoint corners. The only flaw is two VERY LIGHT tape pulls on the reverse which according to our super strict published grading standards forces us to grade it a 89. Without these two light tape pulls our grade would surely be 97.
In regards to value the high water mark for this issue was $28 875 on 9/20/15. Another specimen realized just under $25 000 in 2005. We have sold one previous copy with multiple tears multiple pinholes and multiple horizontal and vertical creases for $12 100 almost 7 years ago in 2013.
This lot represents a sensational opportunity for the advanced collectors to acquire one of the most sought after and historically important concert posters from the 1960's in virtually unimprovable Museum Quality condition.
Supreme rarity quality and historical importance from what many consider to be The Greatest Rock and Roll Band in The World!
If you are anywhere near our offices we invite you to experience the true thrill of viewing and holding this poster in person!
