This poster belonged to Frank Westlake owner of the legendary Bindweed Press in San Francisco! A true period piece and snapshot of history. This original poster promotes Kathleen Cleaver as Candidate for Communications Secretary of the Black Panthers party in early 1968.
American law professor Kathleen Cleaver moved to San Francisco in November 1967 to join the Black Panther Party and just a month and a half later she met and married Eldridge Cleaver an early leader of The Black Panthers. She soon ran for and became Communications Secretary for the party and worked on organizing demonstrations creating pamphlets holding press conferences designing posters and speaking at rallies. This poster was produced for that position.
Cleaver was the first female member of the Party's decision-making body and she served as the spokesperson and press secretary. Cleaver also organized the national campaign to free the Party's minister of defense Huey Newton who was falsely jailed for killing an Oakland police officer. This original poster is a direct link to the historically important civil rights movement.
