This lot will be accompanied by a Letter of Provenance attesting to the fact that it resided in the historic Early '66 Time Capsule Collection one of the most exciting and important concert poster discoveries of the past 20 years.

The Peace Rock Original Handbill is the FIRST we’ve ever offered of this issue. The design truly has one foot in the past and one foot in the future. Peter Bailey may possibly have done the calligraphy on this but it also looks like a collaboration with someone else AFTER the lineup changed as the large more primitive and very cool lettering at the center doesn’t appear to be Peter’s which was “Zen Calligraphy neat”.

This version exhibits the updated lineup done closer to the show date. They obviously chose NOT to bother Peter again for a full revision and it was obviously just quickly put together with a rather charming pasted up less zen-like look but more of a zany-irreverent style (cheap to do also) to reflect this FINAL LINE-UP… just like the paste-ups on the cardboard poster. They included a PHOTO of The Great Society as they were the big headliners!

One interesting commentary on the changing lineup appears at the bottom left of the handbill where it reads "The Grateful are testing and Mystery lost an ax." This relates that the Grateful Dead originally scheduled to appear were in Los Angeles for the Watts Acid Test and that Mystery Trend was unable to perform as scheduled due to the band losing it's guitarist!

Many collectors believe that handbills graded 8.5 by CGC represent the best value in the marketplace today. See our blog dated 1/31/18 to learn why demand is currently skyrocketing.
