This handbill just emerged from a recently unearthed and long held collection of Texas material owned by a long time resident and participant of the Austin music scene.
The FIRST handbill of this beautiful issue to appear in our auction! Since 1973 Willie Nelson has been throwing a concert party “Picnic” every year on 4th of July weekend. As the years have gone by the lineup for each event has slowly grown and grown. This poster for the 7th annual Picnic in 1979 exhibits an impressive list of musical guests including Leon Russell and bluegrass legend Ernest Tubb.
The concert took place at the Pedernales Country Club located near Lake Travis in Austin. Originally the Briarcliff Yacht and Golf Club Willie Nelson purchased the property the year of this show. Nelson later constructed a studio on the complex and the first recording produced in that studio was his collaboration with Merle Haggard “Pancho and Lefty”. This original handbill is in museum quality condition!
