This lot will be accompanied by a Letter of Provenance attesting to the fact that it resided in the historic Early '66 Time Capsule Collection one of the most exciting and important concert poster discoveries of the past 20 years.
Bill Graham’s Appeal 1 event absolutely crushed the Family Dog’s Ming The Merciless concert that was held on the same night 11/6/65. The Ming event had very weak attendance and financial losses for the Family Dog folks.
Not surprisingly the original four Family Dog promoters disbanded for a while and tried to figure out how to raise more money for more concerts which was easier said than done at this time.
A couple months later before Graham & Chet really got the Fillmore rolling .. two other Family Dog affiliates took over concert producing. Danny Rifkin & Rock Scully. The pair used California Hall as their independent base-venue. They only produced 2 concerts before exploring a different side of San Francisco’s fledgling music industry vis a vis band management most notably with the Grateful Dead
This flyer was designed by George Hunter of the Charlatans in that same RE-CONTEXTUALIZED old-timey vernacular that as pioneered on the Seed poster. It is also noted as a Family Dog production before the Wes Wilson -Chet Helms FD logo became well recognized
