Starting bid: $1.00
This lot will be accompanied by a Letter of Provenance attesting to the fact that it resided in the historic Early '66 Time Capsule Collection one of the most important concert poster collections of all time.
The Early '66 Time Capsule Collection is comprised of 133 concert posters and handbills. Each piece is from a very brief period January 1966 through May 1966. The collection was assembled by a student that attended San Francisco University 1965-1967 and briefly worked for The Family Dog hanging posters and distributing handbills on the street.
We are pleased to present the very first offering from the historic Early '66 Time Capsule Collection! And WOW! -- what an offering it is!
This spectacular specimen of the ultra rare and historically important BLUE Family Dog Tribal Stomp handbill is just the third to EVER appear at public auction and the first that we have had the privilege to handle.
To fully understand the importance of this offering we quote the timeless advice we imparted in our blog published almost 10 years ago on 1/25/10--
There are certain "rules to live by" that are necessary for success no matter what collectible one is addressing. Today I'd like to share another one of these "golden rules" with you. There is one number in collectibles that is instantly more sought after and valuable than any other number and that is the number ONE. ONE as in FIRST!! The first corvette the first Batman comic the first U.S. coin are all immediately recognizable due to the HISTORIC IMPORTANCE of the collectible in question. Anybody and everybody can understand THE FIRST and therefore THE FIRST of everything has an intrinsic desirability to people inside AND outside a collectible market.
There is no doubt about the UNSURPASSED HISTORICAL IMPORTANCE AND RARITY of this FIRST EVER FAMILY DOG HANDBILL. Just 250 posters were originally printed that were accompanied by a record low number of handbills. It is widely acknowledged that less than 10 blue handbills exist in ANY condition and this corroborated by just 2 previous auction appearances.
Handbills are FAR more easily counterfeited than posters. CGC has brought much needed integrity and stability to this marketplace. Collectors now see this as a vastly undervalued area of interest. See our blog date 5/18/18 for details.
The previous high water mark for this issue was achieved 6 years ago for a specimen that commanded $16 500 on 5/9/13. That piece was cataloged as follows:
"Very good condition with corner pinholes and a couple of faint stains. It displays very well and would be the cornerstone of any Family Dog/Fillmore collection."
Of course the specimen sold for $16 500 in 2013 was NOT independently authenticated or graded by CGC. Clearly the specimen offered here is far better in quality and deserves a bid commensurate with it's superiority. It is 100% Original with no restoration of any kind. It is SUPER CLEAN and very conservatively graded. Just a single pinhole at top center and writing on the reverse keeps it from the Mint category.
For the advanced collector this is an opportunity that may not present itself again for a very long time!
