Underground comix writer Jim Franklin created “Armadillo Comics” and is best known for his poster art produced for the historic Armadillo World Headquarters in Austin. Gilbert Shelton is one of the greatest underground artists in history. Shelton was also an early contributor to the Vulcan Gas Company poster series and was best known for his classic "Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers" and Fat Freddie's Cat comics. He was also one of the founders of “Rip off Press”.
The frontside of this print proof features full color front & back covers of Armadillo #2 (Second Printing) by Franklin. The graphics exhibit his infamous & fantastique armadillo imagination realizations! Below that is the full color front and back covers of the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers #1 by Gilbert Shelton (the back cover features his ever-present DOPE poster imagery with the Freak Brothers in a pair of before and after panels).
The backside of this proof features black & white inside front & back covers with Armadillo #2 interiors at the top half ("From Deep in the Heart of Texas" by Jim Franklin with a portrait of Franklin drawn by CAPTAIN BEEFHEART aka the late notoriously GREAT DON VAN VLIET) while the bottom half contains the black & white inside front and back cover “Freak Brothers” comic strips by Gilbert Shelton.
Ultra Mega Rare Texas style! Franklin & Shelton’s original material is in high demand and considered by many VERY undervalued at current market levels. This uncut proof produced by the classic Rip Off Press is very conservatively graded. A great find!
