We are pleased to offer this extremely rare BG-23 printing in our auction! In Eric King's “Collectors Guide to Psychedelic Rock Concert Posters” this poster is cataloged as PP-4 the Pirate Printing done in 1987. It measures a little larger in size than the RP-2 official reprint and has a slightly different shade of blue in the background.
King states it is possible that it was printed from the same plate as the RP-2 because of the clarity of the print however very few were produced! About this rare PP-4 Pirate Printing King further explains: “It is unlikely the ordinary collector will encounter it because very few were distributed before Bill Graham Presents discovered the piracy and took the appropriate legal actions to defend their copyright vigorously.”
As history reflects The Jefferson Airplane and Grateful Dead were the two top bands of the San Francisco psychedelic scene. This poster utilizes the classic photographs of master photographer Herb Greene along with Wilson’s classic lettering to create a lasting homage to these legendary bands.
