Coverage of Marty Balin's sad passing late last year has spurred worldwide interest in The Airplane The Matrix and Balin's role with both.
First Balin co-founded Jefferson Airplane. Then he got a group of investors together to open the Matrix so San Francisco bands playing psychedelic music would have a dedicated perfomance space to call their own. Balin gave the investors a 75% interest in the club while keeping a 25% interest for himself in return for managing the club.
The Matrix was a converted pizza parlor that held about 100 people. Because of it's small size very small amounts of posters and handbills were needed to fill the small space. The small quantities of promotional material that was produced was created in black and white with primitive designs.
This truly one of a kind lot has been hand colored at the time foretelling an exciting future that would bring Victor Moscoso's ingenius artistic talents and mind numbing use of moving color to the Matrix's posters just one year later with the Neon Rose series.
So this lot represents a truly special opportunity on many levels. First it's 1965 issue date guarantees a rapid collector interest due to this lot's historical value. Second Marty Balin's recent passing has spurred a massive interest in anything related to Jefferson Airplane a trend that's in the earliest of stages. Third this handbill is a major rarity that is literally impossible to find in any condition at any price. Lastly the vintage hand coloring makes this a spectacular piece of '60's psychedelic history that always and forever will be truly one of a kind!
