This is the very FIRST CGC graded example of this poster to appear at public auction. Given its extremely early 1965 issue date it's hard to imagine finding another example equal in quality to this.
This is a super early and high quality Original Poster from a run of shows at the Matrix. The performances featured legendary Blues Man Lightning Hopkins and in support was the Matrix's house Band Jefferson Airplane. This exact design is the one featured in The Art of Rock book on page 161.
Advanced collectors understand and recognize that anything that surfaces from 1965 in San Francisco represents seminal material in our exploding hobby. Coverage of Marty Balin's sad passing last year has spurred worldwide interest in The Airplane The Matrix and Balin's role with both.
First Balin co-founded Jefferson Airplane. Then he got a group of investors together to open the Matrix so San Francisco bands playing psychedelic music would have a dedicated perfomance space to call their own. Balin gave the investors a 75% interest in the club while keeping a 25% interest for himself in return for managing the club.
The Matrix was a converted pizza parlor that held about 100 people. Because of it's small size very small amounts of posters and handbills were needed to fill the small space. The small quantities of promotional material that was produced was created with primitive designs. And how many could possibly remain in this High Quality Condition over 50 years later??
Reprints of this issue are common and can be easily acquired these days however the FIRST Original Pre-Concert Printings of this AOR poster are long lost diamonds. This poster is in amazing condition for being over 50 years old and is super clean with no nicks cuts tears or pinholes!
