We are pleased to offer the FIRST CGC Graded AND FINEST QUALITY example of this amazing and very rare Vulcan Gas Company poster to EVER appear at public auction!
Austin Texas has a rich musical tradition dating back to the 1930’s. Often spoken of in the same breath with Nashville and New Orleans Austin is considered an American sweet spot of musical collaboration and innovation. During the 1960’s a small group of students began promoting Psychedelic and Blues concerts in the Austin area. They were originally known as the Electric Grandmother. Later they became the Vulcan Gas Company and eventually opened a venue under the same name.
The Vulcan Gas Co. was responsible for a wonderful series of concert posters that are very scarce and beautiful. The poster being offered here advertised a very early Electric Grandmother production. The event featured psychedelic pioneers 13th Floor Elevators at the City Coliseum on February 10 1967. The posters from this series were produced in very low quantities and are therefore extremely popular with collectors racing to acquire what little surviving examples of these issues surface!
We have only offered this poster once before and it was not graded by CGC. Almost 9 years ago in April 2011 a lower quality "Mint 95" example that was NOT CGC graded realized $1771 in our auction.
This piece is in Superb Museum Quality that is un-improvable in every way! There is always a ready market for the "Very Best" and this poster is the very definition of the term. It will be interesting to see what premium the market assigns to unimprovable Museum Quality condition and independent third party authentication and grading by CGC.
