This is the FINEST CGC graded example of this legendary poster to ever appear at public auction! In addition to CGC it's been authenticated on the reverse in pencil by world famous concert poster expert researcher and authority Eric King! King literally wrote the book on these posters "The Collector's Guide to Psychedelic Rock Concert Posters Postcards and Handbills 1965-1973". Best of all this piece is also SIGNED on the front by the artist Wes Wilson! In short this amazing poster without a doubt has EVERYTHING going for it!
As history reflects The Jefferson Airplane and Grateful Dead were the two top bands of the San Francisco psychedelic scene. Although both groups were immensely talented and made marked contributions to musical innovation they took different paths. The Airplane were the critics darlings and "looked the part" for the press. Of all the SF bands of the day the Airplane were first to land a big record contract and received relative fame and fortune. The Dead on the other hand were rough scruffy and un-photogenic and not immediately successful. Yet time has proven their impact and significance on the history of music as their genre is actively emulated (copied?) in today’s jamband scene. This poster utilizes the classic photographs of master photographer Herb Greene along with Wilson’s classic lettering to create a lasting homage to these legendary bands.
A CGC Graded example has only appeared in our auction once before. In February 2017 an example graded 9.0 (not signed) realized a suprisingly affordable $1162 in our auction. Prior to that lot we had a non-CGC graded example in "Near Mint" condition offered in our April 2016 mega sale which brought $2313 and it also was not signed. This 9.8 SIGNED example IS IN A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT BALLPARK. In collectibles like life everyone is entitled to their own opinion. We can tell you that the paper on this poster is as crisp as the day it was created. We can also report that the colors are bright fresh and fully saturated. We could also point out that the registration is superb. We can explain that when you view this poster in person it displays tremendous "blast" and eye appeal. We could tell you that this is unquestionably the finest quality example we have ever auctioned or seen auctioned. All of these things are in our opinion true but they are just another opinion. When it comes to selling collectibles it's the opinions of unbiased third party experts that matter the most. In this case this is the finest quality CGC graded example to ever appear at public auction!
