Marty Balin's recent passing has spurred a massive interest in anything related to Jefferson Airplane a trend that's in the earliest of stages. This original first printing poster is easily one of the most important lots we’ve offered in recent years and we’re very proud to include it in this sale!
This incredible poster by Canadian artist Bob Masse is one of the most striking designs in the rock poster world and is coveted by top collectors of the genre! The event was billed as the Vancouver Trips Festival. The poster promotes a May 1967 show that featured The Jefferson Airplane at the Richmond Arena in Vancouver British Columbia. It was a low print run printed on very thin paper making any surviving examples difficult to keep in top condition. This was the Airplane at the point of their commercial breakthrough and creative peak just one month after the release of their historic recording “Surrealistic Pillow”. The Airplane were joined by other lesser known acts at this event.
The popular and colorful Vancouver Trips Festival issue has been reprinted several times over the years so this Original Pre-Concert First Printing poster here is extremely scarce and next to impossible to find in ANY condition! In 10 years of handling vintage material we have only seen it ONCE prior. Way back in March 2011 another example realized $10 478 in our auction. This example here appears in far better shape that the numerical grade suggests and because many of the flaws are so tiny it actually looks more like a Near Mint “85”.
