This poster is signed in red ink by the legendary Dickey Betts & Vassar Clements!
During 1973 Richard "Dickey" Betts of the Allman Brothers Band really begin to flourish as the chief songwriter for the group. It was a natural step for the guitarist to produce and release his first solo studio album the following year. Two months after his "Highway Call" record was released in late 1974 Betts and his band embarked on a tour which included this show at the legendary Armadillo World Headquarters in Austin. In the new album and the touring band master fiddle player Vassar Clements added flavor and strong melody to Betts already solid material.
This poster has just emerged from a recently unearthed and long held collection of Texas posters. Several of the posters in the collection including this one were at one time owned by Texas poster Artist Ken Featherston. Ken was a major figure in the history of Armadillo World Headquarters and met his tragic end by mistakenly being shot to death at the venue at the age of 23 in 1975.
This poster is personalized to Ken by both Betts and Clements: "To Ken In Austin Texas" is written / signed in red ink by Dickey Betts and "To Ken Best Wishes Always" by Vassar Clements at the bottom of this amazing Texas poster from 1974.
Armadillio World Headquarters posters are currently enjoying top collector demand. This can be attributed to several reasons including scarcity historical significance as ground zero in the Texas psychedelic scene and the recently published book on the venue "Armadillio World Headquarters - A Memoir" by Eddie Wilson with Jesse Sublett and forward by Dave Marsh. This example is the first signed piece of this issue we have seen go to public auction! Read our blog dated 1/20/18 where we discuss the skyrocketing demand for signed material such as this lot.
