Here we have a real treasure from the Pacific Northwest! To learn more about artist Catherine Weinstein the show exhibited at www.thunderbitch.com. was named in honor of her blazing a Pacific Northwest trail for later female concert poster designers. This is an original first print poster for the band Portland Zoo at Beaver Hall. They performed in the area between 1966 -1972 and included noted musicians Peter Langston on guitar and Jack Ely on bass. This show was officially booked at The Crystal ballroom but the promoters changed the venue at the last minute so the artist had to alter the lettering to exhibit the new location at Beaver Hall.

The design is by the late great Catherine E. Weinstein and this poster here is one of her more popular “paisleyesque” psychedelic artworks. In the late ‘60s Catherine got involved in the music scene in Portland working on concert light shows.  She was also interested in graphic design. She created her first music poster in 1968 called “Peyote Eyes” for the Pythian Ballroom event “Let’s Get Together”. We sold one for the FIRST TIME in our June 2018 Mega Sale and it generated a lot of spirited bidding! In October 2018 a same graded example of this Beaver Hall issue realized $316 in our auction!

Mostly self-taught as an illustrator Weinstein developed her own take on the psychedelic style of the era. She created a number of posters and handbills for local and national bands from The Portland Zoo to Led Zeppelin! Many works are signed Catherine E Weinstein but starting in 1971 she also used several pseudonyms: “Hedda Goldspace” “The Cosmic Galootess" and “Thunderbitch” the latter resonating as an expression of her personality to those who knew her.

Original Posters from the Pacific Northwest are highly collectible and are increasingly hard to find as time goes on. This example was acquired directly from Catherine Weinstein’s archive by the biggest collector of her work following her unfortunate demise in 2003. This original first printing poster is gorgeous! The design has eye appeal and there are no nicks cuts tears or pinholes. It’s a wonder it survived in such good condition!
