For the FIRST TIME in our auction this super rare and early Talking Heads poster is being offered to the collecting community!
Talking Heads were one of the most entertaining bands of the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. Only into their second year being signed to Sire Records this design was an original tour blank for many of their concerts performed in 1978 and the venue / date information was glued on the bottom center of the poster.
Having just played 15 shows two weeks prior in California this concert by the young group at University of Colorado on December 5 was held in the Glenn Miller Ballroom on campus. The venue’s namesake was obviously taken from the legendary jazz artist attending the college in his youth many years ago. Talking Heads had just released their second album “More Songs About Buildings and Food” in July and were gaining hot popularity on a national scale with their cover of Al Green’s “Take Me To The River” reaching the Top 30 Billboard Single Charts.
Original Talking Heads concert posters have been showing a recent spike in interest by collectors due to their promotional material being very limited and rarely surfacing. This piece is especially scarce and unique because it’s from very early in their career as they began to transform from a quirky CBGB spectacle to the addition of their new producer Brian Eno smartly tightening up the rhythm section's energy for more dance-oriented beats and high quality album production.
We have only seen ONE other example of a similarly designed 1978 original poster ever sold at another public auction in the past 10 years and that example was trimmed with the bottom section completely missing. This amazing example you see here is the FIRST real original and complete issue of this rare and early print run of 1978 Talking Heads posters to surface. In terms of scarcity the opportunity to win this long lost specimen may not come again for a VERY long time.
