Hey Pacific Northwest fans! We are pleased to offer for the FIRST TIME in our auction this beautiful rare gem from days past! This is an original first print poster from the legendary Springer’s Ballroom featuring several local performers from the PNW area in 1971. Mike Russo was a talented jazz guitarist who played the nightclub circuit in Portland for decades. He was also a noted painted being well respected for his work in art circles but unfortunately somewhat forgotten as a musician.
The artwork is by the late great Catherine E. Weinstein and this poster here is known as her famous “Stained Glass” piece. In the late ‘60s Catherine got involved in the music scene in Portland working on concert light shows. She was also interested in graphic design. She created her first music poster in 1968 called “Peyote Eyes” for the Pythian Ballroom event “Let’s Get Together”. We sold one for the FIRST TIME in our June 2018 Mega Sale and it generated a lot of spirited bidding!
Mostly self-taught as an illustrator Weinstein developed her own take on the psychedelic style of the era. She created a number of posters and handbills for local and national bands from The Portland Zoo to Led Zeppelin! Many works are signed Catherine E Weinstein but starting in 1971 she also used several pseudonyms: “Hedda Goldspace” “The Cosmic Galootess" and “Thunderbitch” the latter resonating as an expression of her personality to those who knew her.
Original Posters from the Pacific Northwest are highly collectible and are increasingly hard to find as time goes on. This example was acquired directly from Catherine Weinstein’s archive by the biggest collector of her work following her unfortunate demise in 2003. The press printed signature at right margin uses one of her pseudonyms "Hedda Goldspace". This piece is simply stunning. The colors are bright and there are no nicks cuts tears or pinholes. It’s a wonder it survived in such good condition!
