The Trips festival was one of the earliest major events of the psychedelic scene in the San Francisco . 1965 produced several groundbreaking events including the Charlatans groundbreaking run at the Red Dog Saloon and The Pranksters Acid Tests. Also happening were The Family Dog’s early shows at Longshoreman’s Hall and Bill Grahams Mime Troupe Benefits’. However it wasn’t until January of 1966 when the all the players came together at this pivotal 3-day event.

Conceived by Prankster Stewart Brand organized by Bill Graham and fueled by Owsley the Trips Festival was in essence a widely attended and publicized Acid Test. The festival featured San Francisco's Rock bands lightshows   avant garde film overhead projection and various performance oddities. This immersion course in the psychedelic experience sparked the events that immediately followed most notably Bill Graham’s legacy at the Fillmore and Chet Helms Family Dog productions at the Avalon Theater.

This super scare artifact from the Trips Festival is one of the few remaining handbills from this historic event. The simple yet incredibly well designed image by Wes Wilson is an enduring image. This handbill has survived the last 46 years in the hands of the original owner since the event. The original owner was a student a UC Berkeley at the time .
