It’s a pleasure to finally offer the collecting community this very scarce Grateful Dead Double-Sided Original First Printing Handbill for the FIRST TIME in our auction! Promo material and handbills for this event were only produced in extremely low print runs. VERY FEW have survived.
Approximately 30 000 people attended the 1970 Sound Storm Festival held in Poynette WI about 30 miles north of Madison. Although Ken Kesey is listed on the handbill he was not in attendance. The Grateful Dead performed on Sunday the 26th. At first glance the vast majority of the groups listed to perform were smaller local bands. However promoter Peter Obranovich was determined to bring a real larger scale hippie rock festival to Wisconsin.
Obranovich was friends with Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead agreed to play for $9 500 which was well within the promoter's budget. They played for over 4 hours and extra long versions of “Turn on your Lovelight” and “Dark Star” were performed. The funny thing about the Dead was: at large festivals like Woodstock they had the habit of bombing however at low-key tiny festivals like this one they would always play an amazing show.
The original first printing of this handbill SELDOM surfaces because material for this small regional festival was printed in VERY LOW quantities. Our records show this original double-sided issue has only appeared at any public auction ONCE over the past 10 years. It could be quite a long time (if ever) before another one surfaces again. Rare unusual unique historic! If you are a collector always looking for that Grateful Dead Diamond in the rough this lot is for you!
