Here we are offering a poster drawn by Rick Griffin for a 1969 film by Kenneth Anger named Lucifer Rising. The imagery of the poster borrows from French engraver/illustrator Gustave Doré.
Kenneth Anger was an innovative experimental filmmaker who worked almost entirely in short films. He is recognized as one of America’s first openly gay director and his "role in rendering gay culture visible within American cinema commercial or otherwise is impossible to overestimate". He also focused much of his work upon occult theme being fascinated by the notorious English occultist Aleister Crowley and is a follower of Crowley's religion Thelema.
Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page who composed a soundtrack for the film which was ultimately unused makes a brief appearance. A bearded Page holds the EgyptianStele of Revealing while gazing at a portrait of occultist Aleister Crowley. The status of Kenneth Anger’s Lucifer Rising as a kind of poly-cultural crossroads even extends to its poster art. The original poster by Rick Griffin dates back to the earliest drafts of the film.
