The Trips festival was one the most significant events in psychedelic history. This famous three day event that kicked of 1966 was held at Longshoreman’s Hall in San Francisco. The event was essentially an Acid Test that was slightly more organized. All of the early players were present. The Grateful Dead and the Pranksters were in their full glory and Bill Graham was enlisted to bring some sort of order to the chaos. Within a few weeks he had leased the Fillmore…..the rest is history.
When one appreciates the extreme historical importance of The Trips Festival it's easy to understand why anything related to this event is HIGHLY SOUGHT AFTER by the world's most advanced collectors.
This extremely rare handbill is one of the hardest pieces from Trips festival to obtain. This is the Bill Graham version and was created by Peter Bailey who is also designed the poster for this show that routinely brings $35 000+. This handbill was not known to have existed until about 1990. It is easily 10-20x times rarer than the Wes Wilson designed handbill featured in The Art of Rock. The handbill offered here is featured in the Art of The Fillmore on page 25. Peter Bailey is also known as the artist hired by Bill Graham to creat the BG #1 poster.
To our knowledge this is just the SECOND example of this handbill to appear at public auction in the past 15 years. This lot was previously auctioned off by us on 8/3/11 where it realized $2 228. Another specimen realized $5023 on 11/14/13.
Clearly the marketplace has matured greatly over the ensuing 5+ years. For the collector that seeks out the rarest of the rare or if you are a Bill Graham collector working on a World Class set this is a lot that offers an opportunity that may not repeat itself for many many years to come!
