In early 1974 Pink Floyd were preparing to do a mini tour of France to supplement the release of Dark Side of the Moon the previous year. They were approached by “Gini” a French soft drink company who wanted to sponsor the 7 date tour in 6 cities. The Floyd were offered fifty thousand pounds and reluctantly agreed.
Originally they figured it was a win-win. The band's photos would be taken and appear in some magazine ads for the drink. In turn it would help promote the tour with posters & promo material resulting in cheaper tickets for the fans and more money for the band. Well it ended up having the opposite effect. Hardcore Floyd fans were angry and hysterical about “their” band having anything to do with corporate sponsorship. Feeling their integrity had been compromised Pink Floyd realized it had been a mistake and therefore donated all of the proceeds from the deal to charity.
Roger Waters wrote an unreleased song a month later called “Bitter Love” about the negative experience of selling his soul which was fitting for a bitter lemon drink. David Gilmour was quoted soon-after as saying “We never tasted the f**king drink anyway”.
Photos of these scarce ads have been printed in Pink Floyd history books over the years but the actual poster advertisements almost NEVER surface for collectors. Also considering its HUGE size (46” x 68”) it’s a miracle this poster survived in as good condition. This specimen is truly a unique collectible and the opportunity to own one may not come again.
