This poster is a hidden gem from Janis Joplin’s Final tour. We were fortunate to be able to offer one of those rare instances of a buried treasure that surfaced from a local consignor and walked into our gallery. This poster was rediscovered recently by an antiques and collectibles connoisseur and brought to us on life support. When we first got the poster it was precariously close to breaking apart . It had several hard creases but was still amazingly intact; the paper however was completely dehydrated and brittle. The poster was also very dirty as it had been stored in a trunk for decades. We realized that in the condition we received the poster that it was too fragile for us to sell as is.
We took it upon ourselves to send it to a top conservator who was able to stabilize it. The poster was cleaned the creases were reinforced and the poster was flattened. We only took these measures because we realized how incredibly scarce and valuable a poster like this is. The poster is now sturdy and able to be handled.
This concert was held just a few short years after the artists return to San Francisco in 1966 where she Joined Big Brother and the Holding Company. That Band because of her addition went on to become a major force in the emerging San Francisco psychedelic rock scene. In 1967 she quickly gained national attention after her performance at the Monterey Pop Festival. By 1970 Janis had grown into a full-fledged sensation and was receiving top billing under her own name at large capacity venues like University of Maryland’s Cole Field House. Almost as significant as the headliner was that Van Morrison was the opener for this show. Within four months of the show this incredible talent that was Janis Joplin was gone form this earth.
