This poster for a Country Joe and the Fish concert held at the Old Civic Auditorium in Honolulu Hawaii is the most difficult of any of Rick Griffin posters for collectors to obtain. Those that do exist are held tightly by hardcore collectors Super large in scale printed on thin glossy paper and distributed only in Hawaii it’s a wonder that this poster has survived at all. Truly only a handful of these exist in any state of preservation. This poster is scarcer than the BG 105 and Hawaii Aoxomoxoa which both currently demand five figure price tags . We have never handled this poster nor have we seen or heard of this poster being offered in over eight years .
The central image is Murphy Rick Griffins surfer cartoon character that propelled him into relative fame. Murphy is culled from Ricks early days as an Illustrator for Surfer Magazine. His cartoons of Murphy appeared in Surfer in 1960 and established Rick as a leading surf artist way before he made his way North to San Francisco to be a part of the burgeoning psychedelic art scene. In this poster Murphy is surrounded by images from some of Griffins previous works. The Vine from the San Mescalito poster the Flying eye The Royal Cream can it’s all in there. This poster was created as a quasi self-portrait of Rick.
An amazing individual consigned this poster to PAE. The poster has been in the hands of the original owner since the day he received it in 1969. This collector was the owner of several Southern California head shops and was able to gather an amazing assortment of posters because of that position. He was right in the thick of it in the sixties. As a prominent member of a So Cal motorcycle club he attended all of the major events of the day. His recollections of the era are spellbinding. This wonderful man recalls accounts of being backstage at the Fillmore and Carousel Ballrooms having been invited to Janis’ housewarming party and his role in several feature films and documentaries of the day .On a personal note having a consignor like this and getting to hear all the stories is the stuff make dealing in this precious material even more meaningful and fun. We will be offering several items from this collection in the coming months.
This poster measures 22 1/8” x 28 3/16”. and exhibits the following flaws: a pinhole in each corner a horizontal fold and several light horizontal bends. General handling throughout a significant area of broken ink in the blue background of the top left quadrant a ½” tear on the and a ¼’ tear top left side.
Note: This poster was sent to a qualified paper conservator who flattened the poster and reinforced the tears and the hole in the top left with Methylcellulose tape. Methyl cellulose tape is a completely reversible paper conservation product and is water soluble. The poster was treated with the highest quality care possible. No material or ink has been added all the work is completely benign and does not disrupt the integrity or originality of the poster.
This poster has a reserve. The bids will appear in “RED “ until the Reserve is met.
