The Monterey Pop Festival was, by many accounts, the catalyst that turned 1960s rock music into a cultural movement. The 3-day festival was captured on film for DA Pennebaker 1968 movie.
The festival, which symbolized the Summer of Love, brought to the stage perhaps the greatest festival lineup of all time. Not only did the festival present the audience with the first U.S. performances by both Jimi Hendrix and The Who, both of which were incendiary, it also introduced the world to Janis Joplin and captured an earth-moving performance by Otis Redding just months before his untimely death.
Two versions of the original poster were printed. The first, larger-format promotional poster was created to advertise the show! The smaller print was sold at the festival as commercial merchandise. The example that we are offering in this auction is the much larger advertising poster (OP-1). This poster is 10 times scarcer than the smaller version. Both were printed on foil-surfaced cardboard. The foil shows every flaw, so undamaged copies are especially difficult to find. It's one of the most beautiful, important, and sought-after posters of the entire era and is prominently displayed in The Art of Rock, plate 3.5.
Condition: Creases, tackholes, foil and ink loss, hole left edge.
