This original poster, designed by artist Frank Melton, was produced for the grand opening of the Straight Theater - three shows over the weekend of July 21st 1967. The venue, located at 1702 Haight Street, was an active participant in San Francisco's cultural movement from 1966-1969. The Straight was a renovated movie theatre that not only hosted San Francisco rock bands but also served as a community hub for a variety of performing arts and social-action organizations.
The shows featured many Bay Area bands, including Quicksilver Messenger Service, Country Joe and the Fish, Blue Cheer, Mother Earth, and more. The Grateful Dead performed on Sunday the 23rd, and Beat Generation icon and Bus Driver Neal Cassady joined the band on stage for a 15-minute spoken-word performance while the Dead jammed. Big Brother & Janis also performed that same evening. It must have been a wild weekend!. Last year, a similar poster sold at auction for $5,750.00.
