This poster announced a two-night Pacific Northwest run headlined by Sonic Youth in August, 1990. The shows, held at Portland's Melody Ballroom and Seattle's Moore Theatre, featured support from Nirvana and STP.. The artwork is the same Raymond Pettibon creation that appears on the cover of Sonic Youth's album, Goo, which was released just two months before these shows. The album was not only the band's first major label release, but is widely regarded as not only one of their greatest albums, but one of the most important alternative rock releases of all time.
At this point, Nirvana was just a year away from the release of Nevermind, which launched the band into worldwide success and is credited with bringing alternative music into the mainstream, which they likely would not have achieved without the help of Sonic Youth. The two bands were quite important to one another; Kurt Cobain took inspiration from Sonic Youth when writing Nevermind, and Sonic Youth helped the band get signed to DGC Records, who later released the album. This is an incredible piece of history that has never appeared in our auction before. Bid accordingly!
