The Magic Mountain Music Festival is considered to be the FIRST ROCK MUSIC FESTIVAL! It was organized by radio station KFRC as a charity fundraiser & promotional event, and took place in the late spring of 1967. The Monterey Pop Festival was a week later, but this was no doubt the first of its kind when it came to the future trend of outdoor concerts.
At least 36,000 people attended the two-day concert and fair. After enjoying a scenic ride up the mountain from the Marin County Civic Center, Mill Valley, and other starting locations, a giant Buddha Balloon greeted attendees when they arrived at the outdoor amphitheater. It was originally scheduled for June 3rd and 4th, but was delayed one week by inclement weather, and actually happened on June 10th and 11th.
Several acts booked for the original dates were unable to perform, but The Doors were still able to squeeze it into their busy schedule. Even though they were double-booked later in the evening on June 10th at The Fillmore, the band played a good, strong afternoon set, with Jim Morrison swinging off a few flag poles while churning the crowd rather effectively! The Doors' performance turned out to be one of the festival's biggest highlights.
This is one of two posters by the event produced by artist Jack Hatfield in a diptych format. The second poster is also available in this auction!
