This lot offers an early handbill for a 1967 performance of The Beard at The Wharf Theatre in San Francisco. The Beard was a play by beat playwright Michael McClure, and it’s a true gem from the era. Michael McClure was one of our nation's most famous and cherished Beat Poets. Although not a musical event, The Beard was a perfect illustration of how inspired young artists pushed the envelope and created a new culture. The Beard was a groundbreaking avant-garde theatrical production and not unlike the music of the time, this play changed theatre from that point forward. The play paired the legendary outlaw Billy The Kid (William H. Bonney) in eternity with film actress and sex symbol Jean Harlow. The play was very risqué and controversial at the time and was repeatedly shut down for being obscene.
Condition: Thin paper. "Held Over Encore Theatre" stamp.
