This rare handbill announced an event presented by The Friends of Old Time Music at P.S. 41 in Greenwich Village, New York City on March 25th, 1961. The show featured Clarence Ashley, a country recording star of the 1920s and 1930s, accompanied by Gaither Carlton, Fred Price, Clint Howard, and the great Doc Watson. Horton Barker and Annie Bird filled out the bill. Though Ashley's heyday of popularity was decades before this event, the folk music revival of the late 1950s and early 1960s led to a rediscovery of his music. He toured throughout the decade until his death in 1967.
Doc Watson's appearance on this bill is notable, as his first-ever recording was Old Time Music at Clarence Ashley's just the year prior. This was a pivotal show for the musician, who had just begun to play the acoustic guitar, for which he became a legend!
