Chet Helms is the patron Saint of Haight Ashbury. He was one of the pioneers of the San Francisco psychedelic scene and played a pivotal role in shaping the 1960s counterculture. As the guiding force behind the Family Dog, he helped create some of the finest poster art of the era. According to all accounts, he was a very fine gentleman and was well loved by musicians and audiences alike.
Chet's death was mourned by all. There was a well-attended tribute held at Maritime Hall. This room was a San Francisco venue that the resurrected Family Dog staged shows at for a brief period in the 1990s.
