This RARE poster is appearing in our auction for the first time! It was produced for The Grateful Dead and Richie Havens playing a benefit show for Black Man's Free Store at The Carousel Ballroom in San Francisco on June 19th, 1968. The store was opened in the Fillmore District in 1967 by civil rights activist Roy Ballard, but the "free store" concept came from The Diggers. The Diggers, known as "The High Priests of Counter-Culture," were founded in San Francisco in the 1960s. Most of the members were also part of the San Francisco Mime Troupe. The Diggers believed everything should be free, and so they operated a free store and held parties with free food and free music by The Dead Janis and the Airplane.
