This handbill was produced for a jazz concert held at Town Hall in New York on September 29th, 1953. The show featured Willie "The Lion" Smith, and was held as a benefit show for the great jazz pianist and composer James P. Johnson. Willie "The Lion" Smith was a pioneering American jazz pianist and composer, known as one of the founding fathers of stride piano—a virtuosic, swinging style that bridged ragtime and early jazz. He was nicknamed “The Lion” partly for his bravery in World War I and partly for his commanding presence at the piano.

Condition: crease upper left.
