This RARE cardboard poster announced The Capital City Jazz Festival at the North Carolina State Fair Arena in Raleigh on November 9th, 1958. The lineup boasted jazz greats Dave Brubeck and Sonny Rollins along with vocal group The Four Freshman and Canadian trumpeter Maynard Ferguson. Dave Brubeck was a groundbreaking American jazz pianist and composer best known for expanding the rhythmic and harmonic boundaries of modern jazz. He rose to prominence in the 1950s and '60s with the Dave Brubeck Quartet, especially alongside saxophonist Paul Desmond. Their 1959 album "Time Out" became one of the most influential and best-selling jazz records of all time, featuring the iconic track “Take Five,” written by Desmond. What made Brubeck stand out was his use of unusual time signatures. He was also considered to be part of the West Coast "cool jazz" movement. Sonny Rollins is one of the most influential and inventive tenor saxophonists in jazz history. His landmark album "Saxophone Colossus" was released just two years before this event. This poster is an incredible find for any jazz fans out there!
