This is the first appearance in our auction of this cardboard Grateful Dead poster promoting their April 1971 performance in Scranton, PA. The music from this show was later released on Dave's Picks Vol. 51. The New Riders of the Purple Sage also performed, though they are not listed on the poster.

1970/1971 was a transitional period for the Dead. Their music evolved from the Fillmore Era sound that relied on a frenetic, improvisational, psychedelic blues jam to a hybrid American roots rock ensemble that relied on great songwriting and beautiful singing. Garcia and Hunter created songs that felt like traditional folk music, yet with a modern relevance. This poster seems to capture that vibe. The design is classic letterpress style, akin to Nashville's Hatch Poster, contrasting with the vividly colorful psychedelic illustrations from the San Francisco style that were the band's mainstay during their previous incarnation as Haight-Ashbury’s home team favorites.

Grateful Dead posters have become hot over the past year and continually break previous high-sale records. We look for this rare gem to join that group. This scarcely traded example will create enthusiastic bidding for deep collectors of the Dead.
