Between 1973 and 1976 the Grateful Dead established their own record label and released 4 albums on what they called "Grateful Dead Records". Wake of the Flood was the first release on that label. The Grateful Dead in 1973 were on the cusp of a transition in their sound and songwriting. Pigpen was no longer in the mix and the keyboard style of Keith Godchaux created new textures in the group's compositions. The cover of this LP exhibited an amazing painting by Rick Griffin. As talented as Griffin was with pen and ink, his touch with a brush was equally skillful. After his conversion to Christianity, the artist devoted a great deal of his work to religious themes. The image of the Reaper came from Rick's visual interpretation of scripture after reading Revelations.
