This poster was designed by Gilbert Shelton, the most well-known and successful Texas underground comic artist. He created some of the most enjoyable and popular underground comix ever published. Not only was Shelton the father of The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers and Fat Freddie's Cat, but he was also responsible for several of the earliest Vulcan Gas Company posters.
The Vulcan Gas Company was THE Psychedelic Rock venue in Austin, Texas, in the '60s. Austin has always been a bohemian hot spot and the epicenter of live music in Texas.
As psychedelic as they come, The 13th Floor Elevators, with the enigmatic Roky Erickson at the helm, were crucially influential in the development of the San Francisco sound. Their legacy continues today in influencing modern-day psych and indie music genres.
