This poster is signed by the artist, Rick Griffin!
This Rick Griffin poster was created for Rick's merchandise company that was named California Graffix Exchange. The poster is not the poster that advertised Hendrix at the Shrine in 1968, it is a later commemorative poster produced by Rick Griffin and Gordon McClelland. This beautiful poster was intended as a concert memorial, and to give Rick a chance to use the central illustration on a Hendrix poster. Regardless this poster is highly sought after by collectors. The central illustration originally appeared in ZAP COMIX #2.
We recently received information that while they did print 1,000 copies of the Rick Griffin / Jimi Hendrix Shrine Auditorium poster in 1973, a fair number of the posters were water-damaged as a result of a flood in Jose Kent's (Gordon's brother-in-law) basement, where they had been stored. So, they had to toss out at least 300 to 350 copies of this particular poster due to mildew and other kinds of damage. Thus, only approximately 600 to 700 copies or so were actually in good enough shape to offer for sale.
This explains the scarcity of reasonably good condition copies of this first printing Rick Griffin / Hendrix iconic poster. Copies of this first printing are substantially scarcer than first printing BG-105 Jimi Hendrix Rick Griffin posters, since Bill Graham printed 3,000 BG-105 posters to promote the Fillmore & Winterland shows in that printing.
