This lot is part of a long-held collection of scarce, original printing posters acquired from an ex-employee of promoter John F. Leonard, who founded Records-Hawaii after moving to Honolulu in 1968. A year later he started JFL Concerts, which brought many big acts to Hawaii including: The Jacksons, Rod Stewart, Journey and Janis Joplin. Leonard's company also published Sunbums, a free bi-weekly Honolulu newspaper connecting rock music to the local entertainment industry. To save money, he often had his concert posters & advertising material produced on thin newsprint paper he had leftover from his Sunbums stock.
This rare poster was produced for guitar legends Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley appearing at the HIC Arena in Honolulu, Hawaii on January 16th, 1972. Chuck Berry was nearly two decades into his lengthy career that would end up spanning more than 60 years. He toured extensively and released six studio albums throughout the 1970s. In 1979, Berry released his album "Rockit", his final album until the eponymous release of "Chuck" in 2017.
Bo Diddley's music had a profound impact on rock and roll, influencing countless musicians with his energetic guitar playing and innovative rhythms. Hits like "Bo Diddley" and "Who Do You Love?" showcased his unique style and have become enduring classics. He was also known for his rectangular-shaped guitar, which further contributed to his iconic image. Diddley released six albums in the 1970s as well.
