This lot is part of a long-held collection of scarce, original printing posters acquired from an ex-employee of promoter John F. Leonard, who founded Records-Hawaii after moving to Honolulu in 1968. A year later he started JFL Concerts, which brought many big acts to Hawaii including: The Jacksons, Rod Stewart, Journey and Janis Joplin. Leonard's company also published Sunbums, a free bi-weekly Honolulu newspaper connecting rock music to the local entertainment industry. To save money, he often had his concert posters & advertising material produced on thin newsprint paper he had leftover from his Sunbums stock.
In early 1976, Frank Zappa & The Mothers of Invention embarked on a tour of Europe and the Pacific. One of these shows occurred on January 11th and the HIC Arena in Honolulu, Hawaii, as advertised by this rare poster. The year before had brought about the release of the final two records credited to the Mothers of Invention, "One Size Fits All" and "Bongo Fury", which was a collaboration between the band and Captain Beefheart. This early 1976 tour began with Zappa orchestrating lengthy and diverse setlists that included a handful of new and rare tunes. However, as the tour went on, Zappa dropped many of the songs from the setlist performing a truncated show and removing all new tunes. Though this was the end of the era in which albums were credited to Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention, Zappa would release dozens more albums in his lifetime before his death in 1993.
