1967 The Doors Jack Alix's Flower Power Show Alexandria Roller Rink Flyer Extra Fine 61

We are pleased to offer for the first time in our auction this RARE Original Pre-Concert Flyer featuring The Doors appearing at Jack Alix's "Flower Power" Show for a late concert held at the Alexandria Roller Rink on August 18th, 1967. It was one of two concerts in the area the band played that day - a 7:30 pm show at the National Guard Armory in Annapolis, Maryland, and a late night 10 pm show at the Roller Rink Arena in Alexandria, Virginia. This flyer was produced for the latter.

This example is the first we've seen surface in a public auction! It appears it was specifically made to be hung on the front entrance or inside the Roller Rink itself, as no venue is listed on the flyer, which likely means less than a handful may have been produced before the event took place.

The show was presented by WPGC Radio deejay Jack Alix and advertised as Washington DC's first official "Flower Power" show, with The Blades of Grass in support, as well as a competition between twelve local teen bands which effectively served as an extended opening act for The Doors. This Alexandria concert was somewhat of a homecoming for Jim Morrison, who once lived there during his teen years when his family moved across the country from Alameda. Morrison graduated from George Washington High School in Alexandria in June 1961.

Reports from the show indicate he and the band gave a strong, solid performance, however, near the end of the set Morrison apparently threw a drum cymbal into the audience and was escorted off stage by police officers. No arrest was made, but a typically high-shock-value night for the Doors. This was the only show the band ever played in Alexandria.
